Photos eating your iPhone storage?
Get it on the App StoreClear Cleaner finds duplicate and similar shots across your whole library and suggests the best one to keep — you confirm what goes.
How it works
- Safari 17 and later on iPhone, iPad and Mac decodes HEIC with the system codec, so nothing extra is downloaded.
- Chrome, Firefox and Edge can’t read HEIC. The first time you add one, the page fetches libheif — an open-source HEIF decoder compiled to WebAssembly, about 0.8 MB compressed — and decodes the photo inside your browser.
- The decoded photo is drawn to a canvas and saved in the new format. Orientation is kept; location and camera metadata (EXIF) are not copied.
Good to know
- Some HEIC files fail in the WebAssembly decoder: Portrait photos with a depth map, bursts and image sequences. Safari reads them natively — open this page in Safari.
- On iPhone, Safari limits a canvas to about 16 megapixels, so 24 and 48 MP photos are scaled down to fit. On a computer they keep full size.
- HDR highlights aren’t kept: the result is a standard 8-bit image.
- PNG files of camera photos are large — often 5–10× the HEIC. Use JPG for sharing.
Questions
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and converted by your browser in this tab. You can check it yourself: open the developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run a conversion — no request carries your file.
PNG or JPG — which should I pick?
PNG if you’ll edit the photo further and want no extra compression loss. JPG for sharing, email and uploads — it’s many times smaller and looks the same.
Why is the PNG so big?
PNG is lossless, and camera photos are full of fine detail that lossless compression can’t shrink much. That’s expected.
Does the PNG get a transparent background?
No. iPhone photos have no transparency, so the PNG is the same picture with the same background.
